women's health

Women’s bodies and overall health follow a natural cyclical rhythm, influenced by hormonal changes throughout the month and significant life stages such as menarche, pregnancy and menopause. By understanding and embracing these cycles, we can recognize the unique opportunities they offer – periods of heightened creativity and productivity balanced by essential times of rest and rejuvenation.

The first significant shift in a woman’s life is Menarche, the onset of her first menstrual cycle, making the transformative journey into puberty. Ideally, this should be a moment for celebration, as rituals surrounding this initiation can foster a strong sense of self-worth and positive self-understanding – physically, spiritually, socially, and mentally. Such practices also help establish a deep connection with her cycle, leaving a lasting imprint that supports her through the various changes she will encounter throughout her life.

The Menstrual Cycle is a key indicator of a woman’s fertility and hormonal balance, and it may have evolved to protect the health of her reproductive organs. Menstruation itself is a cyclical process through which a woman’s body undergoes cleansing, purification, and rejuvenation.

The menstrual cycle can also be influenced by the lunar cycle, with the moon’s light often triggering ovulation. Traditionally, women would ovulate during the full moon and menstruate during the new moon. When women live in close connection with one another, their cycles often synchronize, a phenomenon that has been honored in many traditional cultures through practices that celebrate a women’s menstrual “moon time”.

Becoming aware of one’s menstrual cycle and understanding the factors that influence it can lead to greater harmony in life. Often, during ovulation, energy levels are higher, and attention is focused outward, making it an optimal time to schedule significant events and engage in external activities. In contrast, during menstruation, energy levels tend to drop, and attention naturally turns inward, making it a time to reduce commitments and embrace the experience of surrender, release and renewal. By intentionally creating practices and rituals that support the menstrual cycle, one can cultivate a deeper sense of balance and well-being.

Furthermore, Conscious Conception makes a profound transformation in a women’s life. By intentionally connecting with the spirit of the child and involving this spirit in the conception process, a deeper sense of intention and relationship is cultivated, enhancing the bond and spiritual connection from the very beginning.

Pregnancy is a sacred time marked by incredible change and transformation. It’s essential to create time and space to integrate and be present with these daily changes. Turning inward and listening to a woman’s inner world offers a vast reservoir of intuitive wisdom, fostering a deep connection and bond with the baby.  Building this trust with her body not only enriches the pregnancy experience but prepares her for birth – one of the most natural processes in life. The experience of birth is deeply connected to this inner wisdom, enabling her to be present and trust in her own body and baby.

Just as conception is an important time in a woman’s life, the Postpartum period is equally sacred. This time is crucial not only for bonding between the baby and parents but also for the mother’s recovery. After undergoing such an important process, the body needs space and support to restore balance, stability, and health across all systems and tissues. Many ancient teachings emphasize the importance of the first 40 days after birth, recognizing that the mother is as delicate as the baby at this time. It is vital for the mother to rest, nourish herself, and allow her body the necessary time for healing and balance.

The final major transformation in a woman’s occurs with Menopause, which marks the cessation of menstruation at the end of reproductive life due to a decline in ovarian activity and hormones levels. Menopause is a natural part of the aging process, and from the lens of Ayurveda, it is associated with a Vata-dominant phase of life, reflecting an increase in Vata-related symptoms. Ayurveda teaches that a woman’s experience of menopause is closely connected to how has she lived her life and managed her energy.

Every life experience leaves an imprint both inwardly and outwardly, so how a woman supports her menstrual cycle and navigates different life stages will influence her experience of menopause. Ayurveda offers many suggestions and recommendations to support a woman throughout her life, helping her approach this significant transition with greater grace and acceptance.

This is just a brief overview of my perspectives on the teachings of Ayurveda about women’s health, highlighting the importance of honoring and connecting with the transformational stages a woman’s life. By doing so, we can experience life in a more supporting and liberating way,

as our choices and actions shape our reality.
